The Practical Handgun Skills Class is the next step for those who have already learned the fundamentals of safe handgun use and want to increase their handgun skills.

Taught entirely on the range, this course provides the hands-on range time needed to take your handgun skills to the next level. This course improves student’s handgun manipulation and marksmanship skills, and exposes them to tactics necessary for concealed carry, home and self-defense uses of the handgun. To attend this course, you must have successfully completed either our Concealed Carry or Handgun Familiarization Course. Training and individual evaluation areas include:

Training and individual evaluation areas include: 

  • Fundamentals Review
  • Performing faster effective reloads
  • Weapon status checks
  • Presentation of the handgun from and returning to the holster
  • Conducting Trigger Reset Drills for greater accuracy
  • Firing from different Ready positions
  • Alternate Shooting Positions
  • Multiple shot engagement
  • Multiple target engagement
  • Situational awareness and target scan
  • Searching and Assessing
  • Clearing Stoppages
  • Prerequisite:  Students who wish to attend this class must demonstrate safe handgun handling skills.  We recommend completing our Handgun Familiarization Class (HFC) or equivalent before you attend this class. The student MUST know and be able to demonstrate how to safely load, fire, and unload a handgun prior to class.
Required Equipment 
  • Please wear long pants with pockets and belt loops, a sturdy 1.5″ belt, closed toe shoes (no flip flops or sandals), and a crew neck (T-shirt) or button-up shirt (no low-cut neckline)
  • A clean, serviceable, and lubricated handgun
  • Dominant side, hip-mounted holster or dominant side, belt-mounted holster (No cross draw or shoulder holsters)
  • Magazine pouch to hold two magazines (Highly recommended, not required)
  • 3 magazines (this is a minimum. If you have low capacity magazines, or if you have extra magazines, please bring them)
  • 200 rounds of ammunition for the pistol you intend to shoot
  • Ten ‘dummy rounds’ (aka ‘snap caps’ or inert training rounds) (highly recommended, not required)
  • Hearing Protection
  • Eye Protection 
  • Drinking water and snacks
